Why grow indoors, and what it really takes
Growing indoors means you control every variable that a plant outdoors takes from nature: light length and intensity, temperature, humidity, airflow, water and nutrition. That control is why indoor growers can harvest several times a year, keep quality consistent and grow discreetly in a spare room, a garage corner or a wardrobe. It also means every one of those variables is now your responsibility. A cannabis plant is forgiving of small mistakes and unforgiving of neglect: it will survive a slightly wrong pH for weeks, but a stalled extraction fan in a hot room can ruin a crop in two days. The realistic cost of a first indoor grow is a one-off equipment spend of roughly 300 to 700 for a small tent, an LED light, an extraction fan with a carbon filter, pots, medium and a few measuring instruments, plus electricity of a few tens per month for a single small light running on a timer. The realistic time commitment is ten to fifteen minutes a day for checks and watering, with one longer session each week for training, feeding and inspection. Across a full run from seed to jar you should plan for three to five months. Before anything else, check the legal position where you live. Home cultivation rules differ enormously between countries and even between regions, and this guide assumes you are growing legally and for personal use.

Step 1: Choose and measure your space
Everything downstream — light wattage, fan size, pot volume, plant count — is decided by the physical space, so measure it before you buy anything. Height matters more than beginners expect. A plant needs room for the pot, the plant itself and 30 to 40 cm of clearance for the light above the canopy. In a 180 cm tall tent that leaves roughly 100 to 120 cm of usable plant height, which is comfortable for two to four short, trained plants. Anything under 120 cm total height pushes you towards autoflowering genetics and aggressive low-stress training. Footprint decides plant count: a 60x60 cm tent suits one or two plants, 80x80 cm suits two, and 100x100 cm suits three or four grown in 11 to 19 litre pots. A grow tent is the sensible starting point over a converted cupboard because it comes with a reflective interior, sealed light leaks, ducting ports, a waterproof floor tray and strong support bars for hanging equipment. Also think about the room the tent stands in. It needs a power socket you are not overloading, a floor that tolerates spills, air that can be exhausted somewhere, and enough acoustic separation that fan noise does not run through a bedroom wall. Extracted air carries a strong smell in flower, which is exactly what the carbon filter is for.
- Measure height first — plant space equals tent height minus pot height minus 30–40 cm of light clearance.
- 60x60 cm = 1–2 plants, 80x80 cm = 2 plants, 100x100 cm = 3–4 plants.

Step 2: Buy the right equipment (and skip the rest)
The equipment market is designed to sell you extras. For a first grow you need light, air, containment, medium and measurement — nothing else is essential. Light is the single component worth spending on: a modern full-spectrum quantum-board or bar-style LED from a reputable brand, sized at roughly 150 W of real draw for a 60x60 cm space, 200 to 250 W for 80x80 cm and 300 to 350 W for 100x100 cm. Ignore inflated 'equivalent wattage' claims and read the actual power draw and the efficiency figure in micromoles per joule; 2.5 µmol/J or better is a good modern target. Air is the second priority. An inline extraction fan matched to your tent size, connected to a carbon filter and controlled by a simple speed controller, removes heat, replaces stale air and controls odour. Size it so it can exchange the tent volume roughly once a minute, then run it below full speed for quieter operation and headroom. Add one or two small clip fans to move air gently across and under the canopy — this strengthens stems and prevents the still, humid pockets where mould starts. Measurement is where beginners under-invest and then guess: a digital thermometer and hygrometer inside the tent, a pH meter, and a set of scales or measuring syringes for nutrients will save more crops than any premium accessory. Everything else — CO2 systems, humidifier towers, expensive substrates, exotic bottled additives — is an optimisation for a later grow.

Step 3: Pick a medium you can recover from
Your growing medium determines how often you water, how quickly problems appear and how fast you can fix them. Quality living soil is the most forgiving choice for a first grow: it buffers pH, holds a nutrient reserve so early feeding mistakes do not immediately show, and gives you a slower, calmer feedback loop. The trade-off is slower growth and less precise control. Coco coir behaves like hydroponics in a pot — it holds no nutrients of its own, needs feeding at every watering and wants small, frequent irrigations. It grows faster and responds instantly to changes, which cuts both ways: it also punishes a missed day. Full hydroponic systems such as deep water culture grow the fastest of all and are the least tolerant of mistakes, so leave them for a later run. Whatever the medium, use fabric pots. They air-prune the roots, drain readily and make it much harder to drown a plant than a solid plastic container does. Size them at roughly 11 litres for a short vegetative period, 19 litres if you plan to grow larger plants. Match your pot size to the space you measured, not to ambition — an oversized plant in a small tent ends up lit unevenly and packed too tightly for airflow.

Step 4: Choose genetics and germinate
Buy feminised seeds from an established seed bank for a first grow. Feminised seed removes the need to identify and remove males, which is the single most common way beginners waste ten weeks of work. Then choose between photoperiod and autoflowering genetics. Photoperiod plants stay vegetative until you shorten the light cycle to twelve hours, so you decide when they flower and how big they get; they suit growers who want control and a larger harvest. Autoflowers switch to flower on their own after roughly three to four weeks regardless of light schedule, finish in 70 to 100 days from sprout and stay small, which suits short tents and impatient first-timers — but they cannot be recovered if you stress them early. Prefer a strain described as resilient, mould-resistant and beginner-friendly over one chosen for a famous name or a headline THC number. To germinate, use the paper-towel method: place seeds between two damp (not soaking) paper towels, keep them in a closed container at around 22 to 25 °C in the dark, and check once a day. Most seeds show a white taproot within 24 to 96 hours. When the root is 3 to 5 mm long, plant it root-down about 1 cm deep in lightly moistened medium, cover gently and do not press it in. Keep the surface damp and the seedling under a gentle light until it breaks the surface, usually within two or three days.
- Feminised seed, beginner-friendly genetics, reputable bank.

- Paper towel at 22–25 °C in the dark; plant when the taproot is 3–5 mm.
Step 5: Run the environment — light, temperature, humidity, airflow
Once the plant is up, your real job becomes environmental management. Light schedule is the first decision: photoperiod plants stay in an 18 hours on, 6 hours off cycle through vegetative growth, then move to 12/12 to trigger flowering. Autoflowers can run 18/6 or 20/4 for their whole life. Put the light on a timer on day one and never switch it manually; interrupted dark periods in flower cause stress and can trigger hermaphroditism. Light intensity should climb by stage rather than starting at maximum. Seedlings want roughly 200 to 400 PPFD, vegetative plants 400 to 600, and flowering plants 700 to 900. Without a light meter, use the manufacturer's hanging chart and dim the fixture rather than raising it to the ceiling. Temperature targets are roughly 22 to 26 °C with lights on and no more than 5 to 8 °C cooler at night. Humidity starts high and falls: 65 to 70 % for seedlings, 55 to 65 % in veg, 45 to 55 % in early flower and 40 to 45 % in late flower to protect dense buds from bud rot. Airflow should be constant but gentle — leaves fluttering, not thrashing. Change one variable at a time and give the room a full 24-hour cycle to settle before judging the result; chasing numbers hour by hour is how beginners create swings that stress the plant more than the original problem did.

Step 6: Water, feed and read the plant
More first grows are lost to overwatering than to any pest, deficiency or equipment failure. Water is not a schedule, it is a response: lift the pot, and water only when it feels light and the top 2 to 3 cm of medium are dry. In soil, water thoroughly until roughly 10 to 20 % runs out of the bottom, then wait — that runoff prevents salt build-up. In coco, water little and often, every day or twice a day once the plants are established, always with nutrient solution. pH is the gatekeeper of nutrition: even with a perfect feed, the wrong pH locks nutrients out of the root. Target 6.0 to 6.8 in soil and 5.5 to 6.2 in coco or hydro, and check the pH of every solution you pour, after mixing nutrients rather than before. Feed lightly and build up. Seedlings in decent soil need nothing but water for the first two to three weeks. When you do start, run at roughly half the label strength of a grow-phase nutrient, watch the plant for a week, and only increase if growth is pale or slow. Switch to a bloom formulation, higher in phosphorus and potassium and lower in nitrogen, when flowering begins. Learn to read leaves rather than reacting to every spot: uniform yellowing from the bottom up usually means nitrogen is running out, clawing dark green leaves point to too much nitrogen, crispy brown tips suggest overfeeding, and drooping with wet, heavy medium is overwatering while drooping with a light pot is simple thirst.

Step 7: Train the canopy for a flat, even surface
Indoor light falls off sharply with distance, so a plant shaped like a Christmas tree wastes most of its light on one dominant top while lower branches produce almost nothing. Training solves this by creating a flat, wide canopy where many bud sites sit at a similar distance from the fixture. Low-stress training is the safest technique for a beginner: gently bend the main stem sideways and tie it down with soft plant wire or clips, then repeat as new shoots rise, spreading the plant outwards instead of upwards. Topping — cutting the growing tip above a node to create two main colas — is effective on healthy photoperiod plants in vegetative growth, but should be avoided on autoflowers, which do not have time to recover. A SCROG net stretched across the tent gives you a physical guide: weave shoots through the squares until the canopy is even, then stop. All training belongs in vegetative growth and the first week or two of flower, known as the stretch, when plants can nearly double in height. After that, leave the plant alone apart from removing large fan leaves that are directly shading bud sites. Heavy defoliation late in flower is a common way to slow a plant down when it should be filling out.

Step 8: Flowering — what changes and what to watch
Flipping a photoperiod plant to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness starts flowering. For the first two to three weeks the plant stretches, often doubling in height, so set your final canopy height with that stretch in mind rather than the size you see on flip day. White hairs appear at the nodes, then thicken into bud sites; from around week four the buds swell and by week six or seven resin production and aroma ramp up sharply — the point at which your carbon filter earns its cost. Through flower, nitrogen demand falls while phosphorus and potassium demand rises, so switch nutrient formulations at the flip. Lower humidity progressively towards 40 to 45 %, keep airflow moving through the canopy and inspect dense colas regularly for grey, mushy patches, which is bud rot and must be cut out immediately and generously. Do not disturb the dark period. Light leaks in flower are a leading cause of stress bananas and seeded buds, so check the tent from a dark room with the light off and tape any gaps. Judge ripeness by trichomes rather than the breeder's stated week count: with a jeweller's loupe or a cheap USB microscope, clear trichomes mean too early, mostly cloudy with a few amber gives an energetic, bright effect, and 20 to 30 % amber gives a heavier, more sedative one. Pistils browning and curling inwards is a supporting signal, not a decision on its own.
- Expect the plant to stretch up to double in the first 2–3 weeks of 12/12.
- Switch to bloom nutrients at the flip; drop humidity as buds thicken.
- Seal light leaks — the dark period must be truly dark.
- Harvest on trichome colour: cloudy with some amber.
Step 9: Harvest, dry and cure without ruining the work
Drying and curing decide how the harvest actually tastes and smokes, and they are where most of the remaining quality is won or lost after months of correct growing. Many growers give plants two or three days of plain water before harvest; the value of an extended flush is debated, but stopping heavy feeding late is uncontroversial. Cut whole plants or large branches, remove the large fan leaves, and hang them in a dark room at around 18 to 20 °C and 55 to 60 % relative humidity with gentle indirect airflow — never a fan blowing directly on the buds. A slow dry of seven to fourteen days preserves terpenes; a fast, hot dry produces harsh, grassy smoke that no amount of curing will fully repair. The dry is finished when thin stems snap rather than bend, usually alongside a 70 to 80 % weight loss. Then trim the remaining sugar leaves and place the buds loosely in airtight glass jars filled to about three-quarters. Open the jars for a few minutes once or twice a day during the first week — burping — to release moisture and exchange air, then reduce to once every few days. Two weeks of curing gives a noticeable improvement, four to eight weeks gives a considerably smoother, more aromatic result. Small hygrometers in the jars make this precise: aim to hold 58 to 62 % relative humidity, and if a jar reads above 65 %, take the buds out and dry them a little longer before mould appears.
- Dry slowly: 18–20 °C, 55–60 % RH, dark, indirect airflow, 7–14 days.
- Done when thin stems snap cleanly.
- Cure in glass jars at 58–62 % RH, burping daily in week one.
- Give it at least two weeks — four to eight is noticeably better.

Week 0
Setup and germination
Assemble the tent, hang the light and fan, run the empty room for 24 hours to confirm temperature and humidity are controllable. Germinate seeds in damp paper towel at 22–25 °C.
Weeks 1–2
Seedling
Low light intensity (200–400 PPFD), 65–70 % humidity, gentle airflow, water in a small circle around the stem only. No nutrients in decent soil.
Weeks 3–4
Early vegetative
Growth accelerates and leaves get wider. Begin half-strength grow nutrients, raise intensity towards 400–600 PPFD and start low-stress training on the main stem.
Weeks 5–6
Late vegetative
Fill the footprint. Continue LST or weave into a SCROG net, keep humidity 55–65 %, check pH at every feed and confirm the canopy is even before the flip.
Week 7
Flip to 12/12
Switch photoperiod plants to 12 hours of light. Seal every light leak. Change to bloom nutrients. Autoflowers reach this stage on their own around week 4.
Weeks 8–9
Stretch and pre-flower
Plants can double in height. Adjust light height, finish any remaining tucking, then stop training. White pistils appear at the nodes.
Weeks 10–13
Bud development
Buds thicken and aroma builds. Lower humidity to 45–55 %, maintain canopy airflow and inspect dense colas weekly for bud rot.
Weeks 14–16
Ripening
Drop humidity to 40–45 %, reduce nutrient strength, and start checking trichomes with a loupe every few days. Harvest when mostly cloudy with some amber.
Weeks 16–18
Dry and cure
Hang-dry 7–14 days at 18–20 °C and 55–60 % RH, then jar-cure at 58–62 % RH for a minimum of two weeks, ideally four to eight.

Common beginner mistakes
01Overwatering the plant to death
Constantly damp medium suffocates roots and mimics almost every deficiency you will read about. Lift the pot; water only when it is noticeably light and the top few centimetres are dry.
02Ignoring pH
A perfect nutrient mix at the wrong pH is unavailable to the plant. Check pH after mixing, every time — 6.0–6.8 in soil, 5.5–6.2 in coco.
03Overfeeding to fix a problem
Beginners add nutrients when leaves look off. Most early leaf issues are watering, pH or environment. Adding more feed to a locked-out plant makes it worse.
04Buying a huge light and a tiny fan
Extraction is what keeps temperature, humidity and odour under control. An undersized fan turns a good light into a heat problem.
05Running the light too close or at full power too early
Bleached, taco-shaped top leaves are light burn. Dim the fixture and follow stage-appropriate intensity instead of maximum output from day one.
06Letting light into the dark period
Tent gaps, timer failures and phone torches during flower cause stress, hermaphroditism and seeded buds. Inspect the tent from a dark room.
07Harvesting too early
Impatience costs potency and yield. Clear trichomes mean the plant is not finished. Wait for mostly cloudy with some amber, not the breeder's advertised week.
08Rushing the dry
A three-day dry in a warm room produces harsh, hay-smelling flower. A slow 7–14 day dry followed by a proper cure is the cheapest quality upgrade available.
09Changing five things at once
When something looks wrong, growers adjust temperature, humidity, feed and light together and learn nothing. Change one variable, wait a full cycle, then evaluate.
